We know of the excruciating colonial stereotypes – that Asian women are submissive and domestic. But today, this stereotype is far from passé. More and more Asian women are questioning their subservient roles that have been a traditional part of Asian culture.

From being regarded as the traditional conservatives, the Asian woman has emerged from the meek and passive to become more upfront, active and valuable members of the society.

Physically, she is comfortable in her own skin and is not afraid to show it. Although there is an influx of glutathione and all those whitening products, many Asians, especially Filipinas have remained proud of her brown skin. And let’s face it, Asian women are young-looking. A few British and American friends would tell me time and again that Asians “are classic, ageless.”

Professionally, Asian women have always been known to perform their job excellently- regardless how difficult or basic the work is. Asian women even if they have good careers and income, will still consider the man as the traditional head of the family. Of course there will always be exceptions to anything. Many Asian women are overwhelmingly educated and intelligent. But despite their own achievements and getting all the rewards for their hard work, they also work hard to preserve their relationships no matter what it takes. Thus Asian women have become ideal wives.

There are many Asian women who seek careers, but they seem not to lose their female charm and femininity. Their femininity seems to be well in tact in spite of their awareness than they can count and make a difference in the professional stream of society.

Many Asian women are no longer willing to be treated with little concern for their identity or self-worth as they have been by their male dominated societies. Coupled with this is the fact that Asian women are expected to tolerate their husbands’ sexual liaisons with other women. This seems to be the norm in most of Asia with some men having other women on the side, so to speak. These women have traditionally been expected to remain silent in the face of this. But now, these women seek due respect from men and a better commitment of love.

The Asian woman is a pillar of strength in her family, yet has remained a loving, loyal and dedicated mother, wife and friend. In addition, she has inherent respect for everyone, and the values instilled in her as she grows up would always come shining in all that she does.
